Economy of every state depends on three sectors i.e agriculture, industry and commerce. These three are interrelated with each other as the progress or retrogress of one sector effects the other two. Pakistan is an agricultural state thus agriculture gains are of much importance than any other sector.

Irrigation in Asia: Preparing for the Future

Asian irrigation is now at a crossroads. Increasing populations, changing diets, growing cities, and expanding energy and industrial production each demand a greater share of available water resources. With increasing concerns about water scarcity and food security, agriculture as the largest user of water must find ways to increase the productivity of irrigation to produce the food, fiber, and fuel needed by the growing population. As the Asian Irrigation Forum 2012 concluded, ADB reconfirmed its commitment to support more irrigation projects to secure affordable food for the future.

Gomal Zam Dam to start power generation this year

PESHAWAR, July 20: The 17.4 megawatt Gomal Zam Dam Project (GDZP) is expected to begin electricity generation by the end of the current year as work on its hydel power component has entered final stages, according to officials.

Saleem Khan, project director of GZDP, told Dawn that the dam’s construction had been completed, while 55 per cent work on the laying of power transmission line for transporting electricity from powerhouse to a 132kv grid in Tank district had been finished.

Mirani dam becomes a liability Kech area victims still awaiting compensation

Even after completion of six years, Mirani Dam command area presents a deserted look, while the victims of Kech area are still waiting for compensation of the damages they have to face due to backflow from the ill-planned lake five years ago, sources said on Friday.

 Owing to inefficient management of the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), Mirani dam has become a liability, as it failed to provide financial benefits to the people living in the far-flung area of the country, they said.

Mekong Water Dialogues

The Mekong Water Dialogues is coordinated and facilitated by IUCN and supported by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland. It was initiated to work with countries of the Mekong Region - Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand and Viet Nam - to improve water governance by facilitating transparent and inclusive decision-making to improve livelihood security, human and ecosystem health.

The poor are particularly vulnerable to these changes and are already suffering from rising sea levels and increasingly devastating storms, droughts, and floods. Combined with other strains on the environment, these forces could reverse hard-won development gains.

BRIDGE – Training workshop on water governance

Promoting water governance capacity across boundaries lies at the core of the IUCN BRIDGE -Building River Dialogue and Governance- project. A training workshop on water governance learning took place in Lima, Peru from 13 to 15 April for BRIDGE coordinators from Asia, Central and South America.
