PMD Warns of Flooding After India’s Water Release

ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) – The Pakistan Meteorological Department on Monday issued a warning about the chances of riverine flood in Pakistan as India is mulling to release rainwater from its main rivers in next few days.

The impetus for the flood is the significant increase, 25 % to be precise above average rain since the onset of the monsoon season.

Detailing about the likely flood, PMD Director-General Dr Ghulam Rasul told that normal to heavy showers are expected in the catchment areas near India from August 31 to September 1.

Pakistan moves int’l court against Indian water projects

LAHORE - Islamabad moved international court of arbitration against two hydropower projects being built by India in held Kashmir, said a top official of Ministry of Water & Power in an interaction with journalists at Wapda House yesterday.

The official, who wanted not to be named, said the decision to approach the court of arbitration had been taken on the recommendation of international lawyers hired to pursue Pakistan’s case on Kishanganga and Ratle Power projects.

Indian pumps depleting ground water in Pakistan

LAHORE - Massive extraction of groundwater for agriculture purposes by hundreds of thousands of subsidised tube-wells in India has put the underground water resources of Pakistan at risk.

Leading water experts believe the situation is dangerous for both the countries since no international law or mutual treaty between Pakistan and India specifically regulates the use of trans-boundary groundwater resources.
