Key dam’s construction again delayed due to lack of finances

Diamer-Bhasha Dam may not be completed in next 10 years due to delay

Federal Minister for Water Syed Javed Ali Shah on Thursday dropped a bombshell in the National Assembly by informing the House that construction of the Diamer-Bhasha Dam could not be started as yet due to non-arrangement of finances and the dam won’t be completed in the next 10 years due to the delay.

Pakistan’s looming water crisis

In 1947 Pakistan was affluent in water. It had 5,000 cubic meters per capita renewable water that is now down to 1,000 cubic meters per capita Population boom, is a major contributing factor. But there are others. Out dated irrigation system being one. In a country where 90pc of water in used in irrigation of crops using maximum water are two other reasons. Sugar cane, rice and wheat all use extensive water.

SDPI Organizing Lecture on Water Challenges in Pakistan on Tuesday!

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) is organizing a special lecture on water challenges and opportunities in Pakistan on Tuesday.

Associate Research Professor, University of Utah, USA Patrick Shea will deliver the lecture and Tariq Banuri, University of Utah, USA will be the moderator.

According to the United Nation, Pakistan’s population will rise to 263 million by 2050. It is still a serious challenge that how Pakistan will be able to manage water for agriculture, industry and human consumption in the coming years.
