Senate body concerned over food security, water scarcity

Senate Standing Committee on Climate Change on Thursday expressed serious concern over the threat to food security and scarcity of water in the future from impacts of global warming. The committee was met under the chairmanship of Senator Mir Muhammad Yousaf Badini, while Senator Sitara Ayaz, Muhammad Ali Khan Saif, Nuzhat Sadiq, Saleem Zia, Samina Abid and Mushahid Hussaain Syed also attended the committee.

Speakers call for water, forest conservation for future generations

RAWALPINDI: Secretary Ministry of Climate Change (MoCC) Syed Abu Ahmad Akif has said Pakistan is among a few countries that have passed legislation to respond to the challenges posed by climate change. He said that Climate Change Council and Climate Change Authority, two new bodies at federal level would be constituted shortly.

FPCCI Concerned Over Depleting Water Resources

The Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) on Wednesday expressed serious concerns over the depletion and wastage of water resources. The organization called for a proper water conservation and management strategy before water scarcity becomes a national security threat.

Industrialised nations in Europe have water storage capacity of 90 days but Pakistan, which is an agricultural country, has storage capacity of 30 days which must be increased to one thousand days, said FPCCI President Abdul Rauf Alam.

Climate Change Experts Urge Pakistan to Come Up with Water Management Policy

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan needs to formulate and implement a management policy for its water resources, which would soon be surpassing value of petroleum, says Prof Patrick Shea, former director of the US Bureau of Land Management.

In his lecture on “Relevance of Environmental Laws to Coping Climate Change” at the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) on Tuesday, Shea said that establishing an institutional framework to handle the challenge had become all the more important, as Pakistan was turning from a water surplus to a water scarce country.

Punjab Spending Billions on Clean Drinking Water: Shehbaz

Lahore—Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said that Saaf Pani Project is of paramount importance and Punjab government is spending billions of rupees on provision of clean drinking water to the citizens.

He was presiding over a high-level meeting, here on Sunday in which progress on various matters regarding the project were reviewed. Chief Executive Officer Saaf Pani Company gave a detailed briefing regarding the project.
