One dam a decade: The only way to water, power independence

LAHORE: Muzzamil Hussain, chairman Water & Power Development Authority (WAPDA), during his first year in the office zoomed in on one thing only and that was bringing as many otherwise ‘dead’ projects back to life as possible. These projects, despite having great economic value for the country, were lying in limbo for years even after consuming billions of rupees.

Eight brands of bottled water unsafe: PCRWR

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Council for Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) in its quarterly monitoring of bottled/mineral water brands declared eight brands of drinking water bottles unsafe for consumption.

According to April-June report of the council, eight brands included Fresh life, Al-Shalal, Aqua Gen, Vey, Smart Mineral Water, Al-Sahar, Douro and Do Aab Water.

The water of these brands was found to be unsafe due to microbiological contamination which may cause cholera, diarrhoea, dysentery, hepatitis, typhoid, etc, said a news release issued here on Thursday.

Water ATM machines to be installed in Punjab

In a historical collaboration between the Information Technology University Lahore and University of Colorado (US), ATM water machines will be set up all across Punjab in order to provide the locals with clean drinking water.

According to reports the whole project will cost around 374,599 US dollars. The project will be undertaken under the Pakistan United States Science and Technology Cooperation program.

Parks to tackle water shortage

Freshwater is diminishing the world over and Pakistan is amongst the top water-stressed countries. In 1951, the water availability per capita in the nation was 5,260 cubic metres/year and in 2010 it was only 1,038 cubic metres/year, according to a Water and Power Development Authority report. Residents in urban areas probably do not realise how precious freshwater is because they have enough available for cooking and cleaning. But globally, there are about one billion people who do not have access to clean drinking water.

PSQCA reveales 13 brands selling unsafe drinking water

Islamabad—Comparison of analytical findings with permissible limits of Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA) has revealed that 13 brands including Aquwa Plus, New Nation, Osam, Well care, Royal Oasis, Blue Plus, Livon, Al- Habib, Aqua National, Nation, Naimat, Siiz Cool, Royal Blue) were found to be unsafe due to chemical contamination.

PCRWR declares 22 water brands not drinkable

Islamabad—Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA) has revealed that in an analytical findings 22 brands of mineral water were found to be unsafe due to chemical or microbiological contamination.

These brands included Coral Water, HI-Fresh, New Nation, Pak Aqua, HFC, Total, NG Fresh Water, ECO, Al-Habib, Silver, ORION, Aqua Arabia, Well Care, Desert Dew, New Deep, Lite Aqua, Aqua Smart, Avalon Pure Water, New Smart Aqua, Mazan Pure, Royal Blue and Aqua National, said a press release issued here otherday.
