On World Water Day, resolve to stop wasting water in Pakistan

The theme for this year’s World Water Day, which is celebrated on March 22, is ‘Why Waste Water?’

It could not be more relevant for an agricultural country like Pakistan.

In this part of the world, we either have too much water in the form of floods, or too little water in the form of droughts. On top of that, climate change and a rapidly expanding population are only making our water problems much worse.

Parks to tackle water shortage

Freshwater is diminishing the world over and Pakistan is amongst the top water-stressed countries. In 1951, the water availability per capita in the nation was 5,260 cubic metres/year and in 2010 it was only 1,038 cubic metres/year, according to a Water and Power Development Authority report. Residents in urban areas probably do not realise how precious freshwater is because they have enough available for cooking and cleaning. But globally, there are about one billion people who do not have access to clean drinking water.
