Call for constructing Kalabagh Dam

Thursday, July 18, 2013 - Lahore—Pakistan Industrial and Traders Associations Front (PIAF) on Wednesday urged the government to initiate work on Kalabagh Dam to ensure availability of cheaper electricity to trade and industry.

PIAF Chairman Malik Thair Javaid said here the government would be doing a great service to people of this country by initiating work on this mega project of national importance as a huge amount from the national exchequer had already been spent on this project.

He said the government should develop consensus among federating units by convincing them that building Kalabgh Dam is the only way out, adding that government should also launch coal-based power projects.

The PIAF Chairman said that Kalabagh Dam was an excellent solution to power crisis but theprevious regimes shelved the project for unknown reasons.

He said that Pakistan could generate thousands of megawatts of electricity through coal and otheralternate resources as only because of shortage of electricity, foreign investment in the countrywas not very encouraging.

He said the construction of Kalabagh Dam along with other new dams was desperately needed tostore adequate water. According to an estimate, about 30 million-acre-foot of water is being wasted into the sea because the country has no big water reservoir to store it, he added.—APP
