Jinnah Barrage located across the Indus River near Kalabagh town in Mianwali District is one of the most important structures in Pakistan’s irrigation system, which was constructed in 1946 and has become 67 years old.
On the experts’ recommendations, the Punjab government with the financial assistance of the World Bank undertook Punjab Barrages Improvement Phase-II (PBIP-II) Project, which involved rehabilitation and modernisation of Jinnah Barrage.
Project Management Office (PMO), Punjab Barrages under supervision of the Irrigation Department, is the executing agency for this project. Civil works in the right-half portion of Jinnah Barrage were started on June 18, 2012. Civil works included construction of subsidiary weir, existing barrage repair works and extension of downstream guide bank. All these activities have been completed by June 30, 2013 and coffer dams are being removed and river supply is allowed to pass through the whole barrage.
