BRIDGE – Training workshop on water governance

Promoting water governance capacity across boundaries lies at the core of the IUCN BRIDGE -Building River Dialogue and Governance- project. A training workshop on water governance learning took place in Lima, Peru from 13 to 15 April for BRIDGE coordinators from Asia, Central and South America.

The main goal of the training workshop was to provide participants with the necessary tools and skills in applying good water governance, and the ability to share this knowledge with BRIDGE project partners and beneficiaries in the regions.

The workshop was a vital first step in launching a set of new and innovative learning tools on transboundary water governance that BRIDGE will pilot, and that we hope will reach all interested users in the years to come, wherever they are,” said Mark Smith, Director Global Water Programme.

Learning on water governance included skills on building consensus, how to avoid conflict and encourage cooperation, tips and tools on negotiating water agreements, and the international legal frameworks available to support the process of transboundary water governance.

The governance concepts and practices learned will lead to fostering change on the ground, encouraging reform and improving institutional and political frameworks for managing shared water resources.

Workshop participants experienced innovative learning techniques, such as the application of fictitious scenarios and role playing for negotiating water issues. The workshop made use of interactive video presentations, allowing the participants to learn from online tutorials with dynamic features. Constructive dialogue and feedback was gathered on the learning components and information relevant to regional contexts.

BRIDGE is a project financed by the Water Initiatives Division of the Swiss Agency for Development Cooperation (SDC), aiming to build water governance capacities through learning, demonstration, leadership, and consensus-building, in particular in transboundary river basins. It is being implemented in 9 transboundary river basins, including:

  • South America: Zarumilla river (Ecuador-Peru), Catamayo-Chira river (Ecuador-Peru), Lake Titicaca basin (Peru-Bolivia)
  • Mesoamerica: Coatan river (Mexico-Guatemala), Goascoran river (Honduras-El Salvador), Sixaola river (Costa Rica-Panama)
  • Asia: Sekong (Vietnam-Lao PDR-Cambodia), Sre Pok (Vietnam-Cambodia), Sesan river (Vietnam-Cambodia)
