EU, BRSP ink 1 million euro accord

The European Union (EU) has inked an agreement of Euro 1 million with the Balochistan Rural Support Programme (BRSP) for providing water and sanitation facilities in two districts of the province.

EU counselor/head of the operation, Berend de Groot, and BRSP chief Nadir Gul Bareach signed the agreement on behalf of their organisations at a local hotel last night. The signing ceremony was attended by Balochistan Health Minister Ainullah Shams, PHED Additional Secretary Sheikh Muhammad Nawaz, and a number of government officials and representatives of NGOs.

Deep-water container port to become operational in ‘13

With the completion of Pakistan Deep-Water Container Port (PDWCP) Phase 1 in 2013, the Karachi Port Trust (KPT) will acquire the capacity to handle the new generation of container ships on its drawing boards.

Currently incapable of handling large vessels at its berths, KPT has taken initiatives to improve port capacity so that Panamax and Super Post-Panamax vessels can be brought into the city’s main port.

Floods – one year on: Much more needs to be done to improve rural livelihood: FAO

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has said that despite successes in flood rehabilitation efforts, a lot remains to be done to further restore rural livelihoods and to significantly reduce vulnerability, improve food production and income generation, and increase the resilience of rural communities to future shocks.

In an announcement on its website on Wednesday, FAO said its early recovery programme requires $96 million to support 430,000 farming households in 14 severely-affected districts of Pakistan over the next two years.

Billions spent on foreign visits but no money for provision of water to masses: SC

Justice Sarmad Jalal Usmani of Supreme Court of Pakistan in his remarks said that billions of rupees are being spent on the foreign visits of president and prime minister but while the funds for supply of potable water to the people not being given.
