Water under the bridge

About Rs25 billion worth of water is wasted every year. That’s what the Wapda chairman reportedly told the Public Accounts Committee earlier this week. That is an understatement. Only about 10 percent of the available 145 million acre feet (maf) of water can be stored in existing reservoirs – global average is around 40 percent. Thanks to insufficient storage capacity and systemic losses, the waste is huge.

Water-borne diseases on the rise in ICT

Islamabad: All public sector healthcare facilities operating in rural areas of Islamabad Capital Territory are receiving significant number of patients with water-borne diseases after the onset of hot and humid weather in the region however ICT Health Department claims that the situation is well under control at the time.

New building for US-Pakistan Center for Advanced Studies in Water inaugurated

KARACHI: United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission Director Jerry Bisson and Deputy Mission Director Denise Herbol on Thursday inaugurated a new building and research center at Mehran University of Engineering & Technology (MUET), Jamshoro.

The facility was constructed with the support of the U.S. government under the U.S.-Pakistan Center for Advanced Studies in Water (USPCAS-W) project.

When scarcity strikes

Water is a basic necessity of life. Since access to water has been recognized as a human right, the obligation to provide clean and safe drinking water across the globe has fallen on various government agencies.

However, over one billion people across the globe do not have access to basic water supplies. Nearly half of the developing world’s population suffers from an assortment of diseases because water supply remains contaminated.
